Surgical Orthodontic Treatment

In some instances, orthodontic treatment alone may not be enough to correct your bite, the misalignment of your jaws and achieve the facial change that you desire.  In these cases, corrective jaw surgery in conjunction with orthodontic treatment may be a treatment option that needs to be discussed with you.

Your orthodontist may discuss the surgical option if:

  • Moving your teeth with braces only will not be enough to correct your bite
  • Treatment with braces alone, without jaw surgery, will have a negative impact on your facial appearance and the long term health of your teeth and gums
  • Jaw surgery will positively enhance facial aesthetics, correct the bite and correct any functional problems

We understand that being told that you may need jaw surgery is a daunting prospect.  However, we will take the time to listen to all of your concerns and thoroughly explain why this option may be beneficial in your case.

If you do wish to consider a surgical treatment option, the next step is to have a consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.  The surgeon will further examine and diagnose your skeletal problems and will discuss with you the surgical procedure, your hospital stay, recovery and the appropriate level of insurance cover required.

Once you have had a consultation with the surgeon, you will have another discussion with us so that we can answer any other questions that you may still have.  With all this information, you are then able to make an informed decision on whether you want to undertake a combined surgical orthodontic treatment plan.
